Late Night Hodgepodge
September 29, 2002 | Leave a Comment
There are so many things going on at the moment that this entry will probably seem to be a jumble of unrelated crap. Ah, well. Welcome to my brain, folks.
It?s been a pretty relaxing day for the most part, which is a bit unusual around here for a Sunday. Agent J is notorious for dawn until dusk, non-stop home improvement and chores behavior on this day of the week. He tries to get as much done as he can before the start of his workweek. It drives me bonkers sometimes, but it would drive him even more so just to let stuff slide, so I put up with it. The reason things were different today is because he is taking tomorrow and Tuesday off from work.
In other words, Tuesday will be bonkers day this week. Heh.
Tomorrow we are going for a daytrip over the river to Galena, Illinois. It?s an artsy little town about 15 miles from here; the main street is filled with nice galleries and interesting places to shop, so it should be lots of fun nosing around for a few hours. There is also a fantastic winery there and they let you sample as much of the stuff as you like. That?s always J?s favorite place to go while we?re there and he usually ends up buying a few bottles of their award-winning Beaujolais.
I?ll try to get a picture of him so you can see the how pretty and pink his nose gets when he?s buzzed. The lush.
We are also going to drive around the Galena Territories and look at some of the beautiful countryside. I *promise* you pictures of that!
I stayed up waaaaaay too late last night learning to use the FTP client that I have installed. But I feel like I am making progress! At least I understand what most of the geek terminology means now, and I successfully uploaded and downloaded a file from my site. I think I?m going to have to find a different web host than DotEasy, though — one with more customer support. I?m looking into DreamHost right now. Does anyone know anything good or bad about that company? Do you have another reliable host you can recommend? Please let me know if you do.
Thanks to all who have offered to help me figure this stuff out, too. I?m probably going to take you up on your offers someday soon, so be sure to stock up on aspirin in advance. Just a fair warning!
You know, I never did find anymore of my embroidery supplies last week. But I did go out and get everything I need to start a new project and I?ve been happily stitching for an hour or so each night. I had forgotten how much I love to do this! It has been very relaxing and I picked up on my rhythm again naturally, even though I haven?t stitched in years. Here is a photo of the sampler that I am working on. I really like the design; especially the satin-stitched border.

?Come Fly Away? by Dawn Bradford of Sheepish Designs.
Alrighta. I should get to bed and snooze. I have to be completely rested before we go off on our adventure. Afterall, tomorrow isn?t Monday? it?s ?Funday!? (this according to Agent J. and he never fibs about his fun.)
More later, friends. Thanks for dropping by for a visit. ![]()

I consider myself to be a fairly intelligent person, but damn it, there are just some things that I can?t figure out by reading the instructions — repeatedly.
I really dislike that about myself. To me, it is one of my many embarrassing flaws that I would rather no one ever found out about. Eventually the desire for progress makes me humble myself and plead for the assistance of those who are wiser and more experienced than I am.
Here is the current dilemma:
I?ve had my own domain since February of this year, and I still can?t figure out how to publish my journal there. (Stop laughing!) Ideally, what I would like to do is stop using Blogger as a publishing tool, and use something like GreyMatter, Movable Type, or this interesting program I?ve found called pMachine.
I?ve gotten as far as installing an FTP application, but hell if I know how to use it. I can?t even get the thing to connect to my host site (DotEasy.com) because I think I am plugging in the wrong information.
Other questions:
What the fuck is an ?upload path??
Does ?remote file name? refer to the entry I want to post?
How much space would my journal require on the host site? Would I need to buy more space?
GAH~! I hate this. When it comes to technical stuff I?m about as smart as a bag of hammers. I need a local techno-geek to tutor me. Or maybe an FTP/Webpage tutorial that is written in a simple language that a fifth grader could understand. It is so frustrating to surf around and see entire websites built by little computer-genius kids, and I can?t figure out how to upload something in a !@#$% ?upload path.?
My goal is to have my journal on my *own* domain by this time next year. Archives and all. After that, I?ll figure out how to add a revamped business website for my artwork. Can anyone direct me to dork-proof tutorial? I would really appreciate it.
(Ouchie. My left brain is aching again.)
Boycott Amazon.com!

I watched “The O?Reilly Factor” tonight (one of my favorite shows) and one of the segments dealt with something that was extremely disturbing to me.
Amazon.com has a book available for purchase entitled ?Understanding Loved Boys and Boylovers? by David L. Riegel. I have not read the book, but from what I heard tonight, it is basically condoning and promoting pedophilia. Also, the guest speaker in the segment, Richard Ackerman of the United States Justice Foundation (who is filing suit against Amazon) reported that if one follows links regarding this author and the book on the Amazon website, before too long you will find yourself on a child pornography page.
I couldn?t find any such links on the site tonight, but I read a few of the book?s reviews and they absolutely sickened me. That was enough for me.
I love to buy things from Amazon and I have always found their service to be fantastic. However, I cannot and will not support a company that is essentially acting as conspirators to child rape. Pandering that book is a criminal offense and Amazon is facing a lawsuit if it isn?t removed from their listings.
I?m taking my Amazon ?wishlist? off of my page and I am not going to buy anything from them until that book is no longer made available for purchase through their site. I urge everyone else out there who truly cares about the health and happiness of children to do the same.
Updates on this story will be posted as they occur.

Many of you may recall my forlorn ramblings of my futile search for the perfect shoulder bag (see September 17th’s entry to refresh your memory, if need be) Well, I think I may have located Prince Charming of Totes afterall — I found him online! Allow me to flash his photo and stats like a giddy schoolgirl!

? Zip top
? Padded straps.
? Three exterior pockets.
? Fully lined interior.
? Antique brass fittings.
? The Vachetta Leather Collection is a very natural and soft skin with a ?buttery? hand. As Vachetta ages, it develops a distinctive patina and sheen. This leather wears nicely ? as it is soft and ?rugged? at the same time.
Beautifully tanned; “soft and “rugged? at the same time — my God, it sounds like Robert Redford with shoulder straps!
And get these measurements: 18 inches long, 13 inches high, 7 inches deep! That’s 38 linear inches! Do you know what I could do with something that size? ~SWOON~
It seems to have the qualities I’ve been searching for in a bag all of my life, so I ordered one right away. It is supposed to arrive here sometime next week.
Of course I’ll let you know how the whole thing turns out… but if this really is The One we may need some “alone time” together at first, if you know what I mean. ![]()
