Pretty late, yet still pretty.

It’s been a very draining week for me. If you’re a regular Infinitepink-ster you’ve probably noticed the lag around here the past few days. What can I say? The faster I go, the behinder I get!

This is the weekly outpouring of prettiness I have to share. (I am giddy with color lately…)

Setting Sail Necklace

Details:

~ 1 Sea Blue Chalcedony drop briolette, smooth and glossy, about 25mm.
~ Mixed gemstones of orange carnelian, yellow jade, aragonite, natural peridot, and teal apatite.

I’ll be listing this necklace (along with some other goodies) in my shop later today. Be sure to take a peek if you’d like more details!

More again soon, lil’ kittens. The sun’s rising, so it’s time for me to get some sleep…

This week’s Mambo!

The MemeMeister writes:

Hello mamboers! I don’t really have a theme for today, so . . .
Pick one of your favorite songs and tell us why you like it, what it means to you, etc. Thanks for mamboing, and for putting up with me!

I’ve got a lot of favorites, and they all have special meanings. It’s as if I have a soundtrack for my life, you know? Here are a few from my favorites list. Some are fun; some are romantic; some just are.

Bloodstone – Natural High

Once in grad school a bunch of us (faculty and grad students) were having an informal lunch. There were lots of awkward silences because who the hell wants to each lunch with their supervisors you can barely relate to? Gawd. Anyway, this song came on the CD player near the table and my friend Heidi looked at one of the other female grad students, put this really sappy, puppy-love look on her face and said… “Oh…listen. OUR song!”

The faculty members sat there with their mouths gaping open. I about choked on my chicken salad. It was just TOO funny.

Bob Dylan – Nobody ‘Cept You

I was so taken with this song at one time that I scratched the lyrics into the wet surface of the painting I was working on. Still love the song and the painting.

King Harvest – Dancin’ In The Moonlight

This was playing on the radio late at night at the end of a perfect 4th of July holiday. I was just a kid, but somehow I knew it was a sacred thing I was witnessing. I sat alone in the dark, away from everyone… and listened to the people I love most in the world all singing along to this song and watched them dance around in the night.

The Cure – Just Like Heaven

“Show me how you do that trick
The one that makes me scream” she said
“The one that makes me laugh” she said
And threw her arms around my neck
“Show me how you do it,
And I promise you - I promise that
I’ll run away with you
I’ll run away with you…”

Spinning on that dizzy edge
I kissed her face and kissed her head
And dreamed of all the different ways I had
To make her glow,
“Why are you so far away?” she said
“Why won’t you ever know that I’m in love with you,
That I’m in love with you…”

Time can be such an annoying little detail about life. In fact, because of it sometimes you meet your perfect prom date 20 years after the dance. (And that’s all I got to say about that.)

Lyle Lovett - She’s No Lady

My brother-in-law Raymond loves this song and sings it jokingly about my sister, Dr. Cheesecake. He’s such a low key man, which makes it all the more ironic and amusing.

Maroon 5 - She Will Be Loved (Acoustic)

This favorite developed in a round about way. When I first heard the album cut, I didn’t like it at all. (Still don’t.) But when I heard this acoustic version, I just loved it. It just sounds genuinely passionate to me and I like the way the lead singer interacts with the audience at the end of the song.

Nearly every mix CD I carry with me has this song on it.

Backstreet Boys – I Want It That Way

Another unusual grad school memory. I had assigned my Beginning Drawing students a really difficult still life project, and some of them were struggling with it. Well, I was busting my ass on my thesis at the time so I was having a hard time mustering up any sympathy. The night before their project was due I went to the art building really late – and I heard this song blasting away, coming out of my classroom. I snuck up on the kids and peeked in the doorway. Five of (what I had thought were) the laziest girls in the class were sitting at their drawing tables, working away, singing along with this song and having a very good time. They had finally found their groove!

I was shocked. I was even more shocked when the song stopped playing and one of the girls said: “You know, Christine is hard teacher but at least I know I am learning something in this class…”

And they all agreed! Then another said:

“Yeah, and it’s not always about art either…”

 Hint: It’s NEVER about art.

Jerry Butler - Make It Easy on Yourself

I don’t know if I’ve ever talked about this one before, but it’s got a weird fascination attached, too. Once when I was little (it must have been around the second grade or so) I was sick and had to stay home from school. Well, this song played in the background of a soap opera that my mom watched that day and I swear, it was imprinted on my brain. I can still recall the scenario: I was curled up in a chair, covered up with a blanket and peeling an orange, trying to figure out some melodramatic adult situation on General Hospital. (It was a black and white TV, too. Another weird imprinted detail!)

Anyway, it’s been with me ever since. I never appreciated the lyrics until decades later, of course, because they are way too involved for a kid to comprehend. It’s a beautiful song, though, and I’ve become a devoted Jerry Butler fan because of it.

Harry Nilsson - Me and My Arrow

I clearly recall watching this animated short film (Me and My Arrow) with both of my sisters when we were little. We all loved ol’ round-headed Oblio and his dog, and we walked around singing this song for weeks. Probably drove The ‘Rents crazy. Hehe.

George Harrison - My Sweet Lord

I was about 9 years old when this song came out in 1970. It was the first piece of music that made me start thinking about God and religion (even at that young age) and it is so dear to me because of that.

I’ve always found the plagiarism and legal controversy over the song to be a bit amusing. The Chiffons had a snit because “My Sweet Lord” sounded too much like the melody of “He’s So Fine”. All I know is that “He’s So Fine” would never had brought me closer to God. Why can’t people just accept the positive influence of something and leave it at that - without needing to own and profit from it?

(I swear, the love of money truly is the root of all evil. And most of the stupidity.)

And the favorites that “just are”? Here’s a few…

Arlo Guthrie - City of New Orleans

Gerry Rafferty - Right Down The Line

America ~ Daisy Jane

Friends of Distinction - Grazing In The Grass

*************

That’s all for the Mambo this week, kittens. I enjoyed it and I hope you did too! Why don’t you leave a comment telling us all about one of your favorite songs and why it’s special to you?

(I want it that way…)

Oh, Monday.

I’m feeling better today. I’m at about 70%, I’d estimate.

Which is good, because I’m getting out of the house tomorrow come hell or high water - it’s supposed to be in the 50’s, and I’m not going to miss it. I’m tired of sitting here trying to find new and softer things to blow my nose on.

My poor nose. It’s all raw and scaly again. Around the nostrils it looks - shall we say - “untidy”. Either that or it looks like I’ve been snorting coke for a month.

*******

My big adventure for today has been upgrading to Wordpress 2.5 RC1, so that’s why things might look a bit different right now. The smileys do anyway. I’ll get to re-installing those later on.

So far everything is running smoothly with WP 2.5 RC1. Color me SHOCKED. I’ve never had such a pleasurable experience upgrading this thang. Plus there are a bunch of new bells and whistles to play with too.

It’s embarrassing that it takes so little to please me. Hehe.

*******

I just bought this bead a little while ago. It looks so much like Maizey that I simply couldn’t resist it!

She’s my fat lil’ love-muffin-kitty-girl. When I call her that she purrrrrrs like crazy.

*******

I’ll be Mamboing soon, but for now I think I need a nap. Check back later if you’d like to download some tunes, kidlets.
