Rain, idolatry and other things.
April 30, 2003
It?s been a weird day. Iowa is experiencing its first big storm front of the spring season, which means I didn?t sleep worth a damn last night. Every time I?d drift off a huge flash of lightning and a boom of thunder would roll through the river valley. By daybreak I was jumpy and trembling like a scared-shitless Chihuahua.
Oh, but I slept like a baby this afternoon. In fact, I?m so refreshed I?d say I?m up for the night. Again. *eyeroll*
I watched American Idol tonight. I?m not faithful follower of the show, but I have caught it more often this season than last. (Gotta keep up with pop culture insanity, you know.) Anyway, I?ve thought all along that the contest would come down to a choice between Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken — which in itself is amazing because neither one of them are stereotypical ?idol? material ? but those two have natural, powerful singing voices. People would have to be crazy not to recognize their superior talent.
Apparently there are lots of crazy people out there.
I was stunned when Ruben was almost voted out tonight. Ok, I was more than stunned. I was pissed off. His voice is like silk! He has the rare ability to vocalize his soul. Ruben?s got a brilliant career ahead of him regardless of the outcome of this contest, but to see him almost booted off was insulting to him and everyone with common sense and the ability to hear his voice.
Furthermore, what especially pissed me off was when one of the judges expressed his dismay at the situation and then stated: ?This is a contest about finding the best singer in America!?
Bullshit. If that were the case this never would have happened tonight. Because the show is titled ?American Idol? people apparently feel free to stupidly cast their votes for contestants based on characteristics and qualities other than TALENT.
If it is true that the show is about finding the best singer, maybe they should change the title to “American Talent” — just to give ignorant rednecks some people a clue as to what they are looking for.
Enough about that. It gets my pressure up.
The studio is becoming pink pink piiiiink. The painting should be done by the end of the week; then J will start to install all of the light fixtures, outlet and switch plates, and the ceiling fan. I feel like a home improvement widow these days, but if that’s what it takes to get it all finished, I’ll grin and bear it.
A short weekend get-away is definitely called for, though. Even if it means I have to hogtie Agent J and throw him in the trunk of the car just to get him out of town. Just look the other way folks, and pay no attention to his muffled cries for help. I’ll bring him back smiling and in one piece. Promise. :)~
It’s still storming, but I’m going to read for awhile and see if that brings on the sleepies. Hope springs eternal!

I think what happened with Ruben is that everybody thought he was definitely going to get a ton of votes, so they didn’t bother to vote themselves. I don’t think it’s because they don’t like his talent.
